Eurovision night is one of the few TV events that turns into a party. Glitter, flags and questionable key changes are all part of the fun. Here's how to build a night around it.
Start with ABBA
ABBA won Eurovision in 1974 with Waterloo, and they remain the contest's most famous winners. An ABBA tribute is the natural headliner for a song contest party.
- ABBA Fernando: harmonies and shimmering costumes.
- Mamma Mia: Jeni's show recreating the hit film, full of ABBA songs.
- Seventh Heaven: available as their own show or their ABBA tribute, Abba 2 Nite.
Fitting the act around the broadcast
The contest is a long live broadcast on a Saturday evening in May. Two options work:
- Before the show: a tribute set early in the evening, then everyone watches the contest.
- After the show: watch the songs, then bring on the tribute while the votes come in.
If your guests won't want to miss the scoring, avoid booking an act during it.
Games and extras
- Sweepstake: draw a country each when guests arrive.
- Score cards: let guests mark each entry for staging, costume and song.
- Fancy dress: come as a past entrant or a flag.
- Photo booth: a magic mirror for glitter-covered group shots.
Quick answers
Is Eurovision only for fans?
No. Most guests enjoy the spectacle even if they rarely watch.
