A magician is one of the most flexible acts you can book. The same performer might work tables at a wedding drinks reception, then perform a short stage show after dinner. The key is matching the style of magic to the moment.
Close-up, walkabout or stage?
- Close-up or table magic is performed a few feet from guests, usually with cards, coins and borrowed items. It suits drinks receptions, wedding breakfasts between courses and corporate dinners.
- Walkabout or mix-and-mingle magic is close-up magic performed to small groups as the magician moves around the room. It breaks the ice when guests don't know each other.
- Stage or cabaret magic is a set-piece show for the whole room. It needs everyone seated and facing the same way.
- Comedy magic blends tricks with stand-up. The Magic Guy is a comedy magician on our books.
How long should you book?
Walkabout magic is usually booked for a set period, often an hour or two, so the magician can reach every table or group. As a rough guide, the more guests you have, the more time you need for everyone to see something. A stage show is normally a single set.
Children's magic is different
Magic for children needs a different approach: shorter routines, lots of participation and plenty of laughs. If your audience is mostly under ten, look at a dedicated children's entertainer such as Sparky Marky.
When to schedule it
- Weddings: during the drinks reception, while photos are being taken, is the classic slot.
- Corporate dinners: between courses, or as guests arrive.
- Parties: early in the evening, before the music gets loud. Close-up magic doesn't work well over a disco.
Is a hypnotist a better fit?
If you want a big, all-in group show where guests become the stars, a stage hypnotist such as Grant Saunders may suit better. See our hypnotist booking guide.

Quick answers
Can a magician perform at a wedding breakfast?
Yes. Many perform between courses so they don't interrupt eating or speeches.
Is close-up magic suitable for a large event?
Yes, if you book enough time for the magician to reach most groups, or more than one performer.
Do you add a booking fee?
