A wedding band is often the biggest single entertainment booking you'll make. These are the questions worth asking first, whether you book directly or through an agency.
The line-up and the music
- Who is in the line-up on our date? Function bands sometimes use deputy musicians. That is normal in the industry, but you should know.
- Can we see live video? Look for footage at real functions, not just promotional edits. Bands such as The Pedal Tones and Fresh Grooves have videos on their profiles.
- What is on the set list? Ask for it and check it suits your guests.
- Will you take requests? And will you avoid songs we dislike?
- Can you learn our first dance? How much notice do you need?
Timings
- How long are the sets? Two sets of around 45 to 60 minutes is common.
- What happens in the breaks? Most bands play a recorded playlist so the room never goes quiet.
- How long do you need to set up? Larger bands often need an hour or more, plus a soundcheck.
- Can you set up before the wedding breakfast? Setting up while guests are eating, or before they come in, keeps the evening flowing.
The venue
- Can you play under a sound limiter? Some bands can use electronic drums or a quieter set-up. Ask your venue for the limit first.
- How much space do you need? Compare it with the venue's stage or dance-floor area.
- What power do you need? Usually a couple of sockets near the stage.
- Do you have public liability insurance and tested equipment? Many venues ask for evidence before the day.
The booking
- What exactly is included? PA, lighting, a playlist between sets, a first-dance performance.
- What are the deposit and cancellation terms? Make sure they are in writing.
A note on fees
Fees depend on the line-up, the date, travel and how long you need the band. We quote every event individually. With Flair there are no hidden agency booking fees: the price we quote is the price you pay.
Quick answers
Do wedding bands bring their own lights?
Most bring a PA and basic stage lighting. Some offer a fuller light show. Check what is included.
What if our venue has a sound limiter?
Tell the band the limit when you enquire. Smaller line-ups, acoustic sets or electronic drums can help.
Is a band or a singer better for a wedding?
It depends on space, budget and the feel you want. Our guide to wedding singer vs band covers the trade-offs.
