"Function band" covers everything from a two-piece with backing tracks to a nine-piece with a horn section. The right choice depends on your room, your guests and the sound you want.

Line-ups compared

Duos and trios

Often a singer plus guitar or keyboards, sometimes with backing tracks to fill out the sound. They need less space and power, cope better with sound limiters and suit smaller venues.

Four- and five-piece bands

The classic live band: vocals, guitar, bass, drums and often keys. They create a full, live sound and suit most function rooms and weddings.

Larger bands

Six or more musicians, sometimes with brass or extra vocalists. They create a concert feel but need a decent stage, more power and more set-up time. Fresh Grooves is a 4–9 piece function band, so the line-up can be scaled to the event.

Matching the music

Ask each band for a set list and compare it with your guest list:

  • Mixed ages: Motown, 70s and 80s classics, and big modern singalongs
  • Younger crowd: recent chart hits and indie anthems
  • Party nights: high-energy covers. Bands like Maxed Out and The New Triple X play for dance floors.
  • Pure party fun: Black Lace are known for their party hits.

Space, power and sound

  • Space: ask for a stage plan or rough dimensions. A drum kit alone takes up a surprising amount of room.
  • Power: usually a couple of sockets near the stage, ideally on a separate circuit.
  • Sound limiters: if your venue has one, tell the band. Smaller line-ups and electronic drums can help.
  • Set-up time: bigger bands need more time and a soundcheck. Plan it for when guests are elsewhere.

Sets and breaks

Most bands play two or three sets with recorded music in between. Ask how long each set runs and whether they can adjust timings around food or speeches.

Quick answers

What size band do I need?

For a room of about 100 guests, a four-piece usually fills the sound. For small rooms, a duo or trio may be better. We can advise for your venue.

Can a band play quietly during dinner?

Some offer an acoustic dinner set before the main sets. Ask when you enquire.

Are there extra agency fees?

No. With Flair the price we quote is the price you pay.
