Couples often ask why a band plays "two sets" rather than straight through. The answer is partly stamina and partly how a wedding evening actually flows. Here is how set times usually work, and how to fit them around your day.
The usual formats
Most acts on our site list their set options on their profile. Common patterns are:
- 2 × 45 minutes: the most common format for evening receptions.
- 2 × 60 minutes: used by many full bands for a longer evening.
- 1 × 60 minutes: a single show, popular with tribute acts.
- 3 × 30 minutes: handy when food, games or speeches sit between sets.
Set length is the time spent performing, not the time on site. Bands also need time to load in, set up and sound check, usually while guests are elsewhere.
A typical evening timeline
- Evening guests arrive: recorded music, or an acoustic duo if the band is still setting up.
- First dance: often played live by the band as the start of set one.
- Set one: the dance floor fills.
- Break: evening food, cake cutting and the band's own playlist.
- Set two: the big finish, timed to end at the venue's curfew.
What happens in the breaks?
Many bands play a recorded playlist between and after sets, and some provide a DJ service. Ask about this when you enquire, because it can save booking a separate DJ. Check each act's profile, such as Maxed Out or The Pedal Tones.
Working back from the curfew
Start with your venue's music finish time and work backwards. If music must stop at 11.30pm, the last set should start about an hour earlier, with the break before it. Read wedding venue curfews explained for more.
Quick answers
Can the band play longer?
Often, yes, if the venue allows it. Agree any extra time in advance, not on the night.
Should the first dance be live?
If the band knows the song, a live first dance is a lovely start to set one. Send the song early so they can prepare.
