A raffle is the simplest way to raise money at an event, and done well it adds to the fun. Here's how to run one smoothly, without it dragging on.

Check the rules first

In Great Britain, raffles are lotteries under the Gambling Act 2005. A raffle held as part of a non-commercial event, such as a charity dinner or a school fete, is often an "incidental lottery". That type doesn't need a licence if tickets are sold only at the event and the draw takes place during it. Limits apply to how much can be spent on prizes and expenses, and the money can't be for private gain. Raffles with tickets sold before the event have different rules.

Check the Gambling Commission's current guidance or ask your local council if you're unsure.

Prizes

  • Ask local businesses for donations, and thank them by name during the draw.
  • Have a few prizes that appeal to different people: a meal out, a hamper, something for children.
  • Put the prizes on a display table so guests can see what they might win.

Selling tickets

  • Sell during arrival and the meal, when guests are seated.
  • Have two or three people with tickets and float, so the queue doesn't build.
  • Make it easy for guests who pay by card, if your venue allows.

Timing the draw

Draw the raffle in a natural break: after the meal and before the main act, or in the interval between sets. Don't leave it until the end, when guests are leaving.

Keep it moving

A compère or the act's microphone makes a big difference. Draw several tickets at once, read numbers clearly, and announce the next prize while the winner collects theirs. A comedian such as Jack Ryan, who lists charity dinners among his events, can keep a draw lively.

Quick answers

Can the band announce the raffle?

Usually, yes. Ask the act in advance and give them the prize list.

How long should a raffle take?

Aim for ten to fifteen minutes. Longer draws lose the room.
