Golf clubhouses host a surprising range of events: captain's dinners, presentation nights, Christmas parties, weddings and charity days. The entertainment needs to suit a members' audience and the clubhouse layout.
Events and acts to match
- Captain's dinner or presentation night: a comedian such as Jack Ryan, who lists award ceremonies and charity dinners, or a host such as Mike Carlton.
- Black-tie dinner: a Rat Pack or swing act.
- Weddings and parties: a vocalist such as Kim B, or a band if the room allows.
- Charity golf day evening: comedy plus an auction or raffle. See how to run a raffle.
Layout
Clubhouse function rooms are often long rooms with windows onto the course. Put the performer at one end with the best sightline, and keep the dance floor near the bar.
Timings
Presentation nights tend to follow a set pattern: dinner, presentations, then entertainment. Keep speeches short so the act isn't performing to a tired room.
Practical points
- Check access for the act's vehicle, which may mean using the course's service road.
- Ask about the clubhouse finish time, as some rural clubs close earlier.
- Agree whether the act needs to fit around a members' bar that stays open.
Quick answers
Can a comedian host the presentations?
Some can. Ask when you enquire.
Is a band too loud for a clubhouse?
It depends on the room. A solo singer or duo is the safer choice for small rooms.
