A sound limiter is a device fitted by some venues that monitors the volume in a room. If the level goes over a set limit for too long, it can cut the power to the stage sockets. It's one of the most common reasons a band's night goes wrong, so it is worth understanding before you book.
Why venues have them
Venues near homes, historic buildings and some hotels use limiters to stay within licence conditions and avoid noise complaints. The limit is set by the venue, not the act.
How they work
Most limiters show a traffic-light display: green is fine, amber is close and red means over the limit. If the level stays in the red, the power to the performance sockets may cut out for a short time. That interrupts the music and can damage the mood.
What to ask your venue
- Do you have a sound limiter?
- What level is it set to?
- Which sockets are connected to it?
- Has a live band performed successfully here recently?
Pass all of this to the act or agency when you enquire.
Acts that cope well with low limits
- Solo vocalists with a controlled PA set-up, such as piano vocalist Adam Press.
- Acoustic duos such as Becky & Josh.
- Vocal harmony groups using backing tracks, such as Girl Project, where the overall volume can be managed precisely.
- Bands with electronic drums, which avoid the volume of an acoustic kit.
Acts that may struggle
Full bands with live drums and brass can find a low limit very restrictive. Acoustic drums alone can trigger some limiters before anything else is switched on.
Don't just turn it down
An experienced act will manage volume carefully, but a limiter that is set very low will affect any live music. If your venue's limit is low, it may be better to choose a quieter style of act than to ask a full band to play at a fraction of its usual level.
Quick answers
Can a band unplug the limiter?
No. It's part of the venue's licence conditions.
Will a DJ have the same problem?
Yes. Recorded music is limited too, though volume is easier to control.
Who should tell the act about the limiter?
You or your venue. We ask about limiters when we take a booking.
